Joe is the chairperson of the tort group within the litigation department and specializes in disputes involving insurance companies. His practice area represents a range of insured and self-insured clients in defense of comprehensive general liability and personal injury claims. These include complex product liability, premises liability, construction negligence, directors’ and officers’ liability claims, wrongful termination, and other tort claims.
In addition to his areas of concentration, Joe is frequently involved in complicated real estate and title insurance-related civil litigation. He regularly represents clients in Land Court matters and often works with institutional clients in other complex civil litigation issues.
Joe has represented his clients at trials and appeals at all levels of the state and federal courts. Over the past seventeen years, he has also extensively used alternative dispute mechanisms, including mediation, arbitration, case evaluations, and mini jury trials.
Representative Cases
- Obtained a defense verdict after a four-day trial in a suit brought by a former commercial condominium unit owner for alleged breach of condominium trust, contractual and tort-based claims for alleged interference with contractual relations and alleged violations of Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 93A seeking recovery in excess of $1 million and thereafter, secured Appeals Court victory for clients concerning all claims against them
- Obtained mediated settlement agreement for clients against responsible parties for failing to properly insure and honor their claims following devastating fire loss destroying their family business
- Obtained summary judgment for a building owner and tenant alleged to have been responsible for a subcontractors’ employee’s fall from roof with injuries and damages alleged to have exceeded $2 million
- Extricated client from litigation also involving claim in excess of $2 million for injuries purportedly sustained during an alleged negligent shipment of co-defendant’s product
- Obtained defense verdict after jury trial for clients wrongfully accused of causing personal injuries to their neighbors
